Throughout his service, Rhodes rose through the ranks, eventually reaching the rank of Colonel. He participated in several major battles of the Civil War, including the Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Gettysburg.

Rhodes kept a detailed diary of his experiences during the war, which was later published under the title "All for the Union: The Civil War Diary and Letters of Elisha Hunt Rhodes." The diary provides a first-hand account of the day-to-day life of a soldier during the Civil War.

After the war, Rhodes returned to Rhode Island and worked as a clerk in a textile mill. He also remained active in veterans' organizations and gave speeches about his experiences during the war. He passed away on January 14, 1917 at the age of 74.
